The Making Of Status: S̶i̶n̶g̶l̶e̶ Self-Sufficient
Q: How did you come up with the story?
A: Ang dami kasing stories (movies, TV series, novels) about single woman, eh. Kaya sabi ko sa sarili ko, why not make a single woman of a character na hindi ‘yong usual character ng ganitong type of story?
Then I made Maureen–a woman who believed she does not need a man and does not wish to fall in love. Hindi niya ma-take ‘yong stigma ng salitang “single” as a (relationship) status. Because she believed that she’s different from other single women. She preferred being called “self-sufficient” kasi mas fitted siya sa salitang iyon. She’s confident with her choice in life but was not confident about how people around perceive her choice.
Q: How did you come up with Maureen’s character?
Not really. Although there are bits and pieces of her that I could relate to. Like her, I also could not take the stigma of being “single.” But unlike her, I’m not a feminist. Meron lang kasing part diyan na ‘yong isa kong experience in real life, ipinagamit ko kay Maureen (malalaman n’yo ‘yon kapag nagkaron kayo ng book niyan) kaya siguro inakala ng iba na ako ‘yan, ha-ha! But Maureen is just a fictional character. But then I believe na totoong may nag-e-exist na tulad niya.
Q: Is this book romance or chicklit?
A: This is definitely chicklit. This is about Maureen’s journey on trying to prove her being self-sufficient and her realizations in life. The character of Kenneth played a huge role in her character development though.
Q: Who do you recommend this novel for?
A: Of course, para sa mga single ladies! Hindi man kayo kasing self-sufficient ni Maureen, I’m sure makaka-relate kayo sa kanya at sa life journey niya in so many ways. Maraming life lessons ang story ni Maureen and you might find them useful to apply in your own life
